The book comprises an introduction and thirteen essays. The essays address the bearing on self-knowledge of externalism about mental content. I will sketch the themes of eleven of the papers and then comment on aspects of the other two. "Some questions about Burge's 'self-verifying judgments'" is by the late Tony Brueckner. He also discusses how semantic externalism is at the heart of important topics such as indexical thoughts, epistemological skepticism, self-knowledge, and mental causation. Including chapter summaries, a glossary of terms, and an annotated guide to further reading, Semantic Externalism an ideal guide for students studying philosophy of language Author: Jesper Kallestrup.

The essays in the book make clear that externalism and self-knowledge raise many questions and that there are many paths to answering them. The best way to deal with the competing arguments, the editor claims, is to follow a principle of doxastic conservatism, which recommends that, when possible, one should favor the strategy that best. In the philosophy of language, semantic externalism (the opposite of semantic internalism) is the view that the meaning of a term is determined, in whole or in part, by factors external to the ing to an externalist position, one can claim without contradiction that two speakers could be in exactly the same brain state at the time of an utterance, and yet mean different things by.

'This important new book brings Putnam's famous brain-in-a-vat argument bang up to date. Cutting edge papers by some of today's leading philosophers show how the argument provides a powerful lens through which to examine central topics such as semantic externalism, self-knowledge, the nature of justification, and metaphysical realism.'.   Susana Nuccetelli is Professor of Philosophy at St. Cloud State University, Minnesota. Her articles on Latin American philosophy, ethics, epistemology, and philosophy of language have appeared in Analysis, Metaphilosophy, Inquiry, and other journals. She is editor of New Essays on Semantic Externalism and Self-Knowledge (), co-editor of Themes from G. E. Moore () .
